Teachers to Get Annual Salary Increment as TSC Promotes 100,000 P1 Teachers from July 2020

The Teachers Service Commission TSC has announced plans to award the teachers an annual salary increment and promote a hundred thousand (100,000) P1 teachers starting July 2020.

Dr. Nancy Macharia, the TSC Chief Executive Office released the good news as she announced the TSC budget of Ksh. 7 Billion to cater for the promotion of the 100,000 P1 teachers as well as the annual salary increment for teachers.

The CEO was addressing the Parliamentary Education Committee (PEC) while defending her budget for the next financial year.

On the issue of the 10,000 current interns, Dr Macharia did not say what the commission would do to them despite the Commission’s intended plan to recruit new 10000 teachers this year.

Salary Increment from July 2020 Part of 2017-2021 CBA Phase Four Implementation

TSC has already implemented the first, second and third phases of the salary increase for teachers under the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The 2017-2021 CBA was-arrived at a means of averting teacher strikes and effecting salary increase though in four phases.

The first phase of the CBA was implemented in 2018, the second 2018, while the third was executed last year on the 1st of July.

Not all teacher job groups benefited in all the phases. Some groups of teachers, for instance, Secondary school teachers in Job group C2 (formerly K) who are holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its equivalent, holders of Diploma in Education at grade C1 (Formerly H), and Primary teachers at Job group B5 (Formerly G), did not get a penny after TSC implementation the third phase of the CBA in July 2019. Going by the CBA implementation arrangement, the same groups will again not benefit on the fourth and final phase set to be in July 2020.

Salary increment and promotion will be a big sigh of relief to teachers as the Commission had announced that every teacher will pay Ksh. 6,000 annually for the newly introduced Teacher Professional Development (TPD) training set to start in April.
